Becoming a Member

The Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills - fondly known as Sunnyhill - is a vibrant and dynamic congregation. New member ceremonies are held several times each year during our morning services.

Becoming a member of Sunnyhill is an important decision. Before joining, visitors who are interested in membership are encouraged to understand the principles and philosophy of Unitarian-Universalism, and to learn about the Sunnyhill church community. Potential members typically:

  • Attend several services and participate in a few other programs or activities;
  • Attend our three-hour session entitled Pathways to Membership, which is held several times each year;
  • Gain a comfortable understanding of our church community, and the mutual expectations that membership involves.

After joining, members are encouraged to commit beliefs to action through service to others, both within and outside of Sunnyhill; to serve as volunteers for church activities as time and interest allow; and to contribute to the financial health of the church. Questions about membership can be addressed by calling the church office or contacting the minister via email, minister-at-sunnyhill-dot-org.

Annual Member & Friend Canvass

Each autumn the Stewardship Committee conducts a canvass in which members and friends are asked to make a pledge of financial support to provide the funds necessary to operate the church for the coming year. The canvass raises about 80% of our needed income. Although the official Canvass is held during the months of October and November, new members and friends are encouraged to pledge their support throughout the year.
